How to Install a Reverse-Cut Windshield Banner

Install your reverse-cut banner

This universal banner will be trimmed to fit your windshield.

The banner may extend past the sides and top. Apply it first, then trim to the glass. A small transfer tape patch covers the cut-out design on the front; the backing covers the adhesive side.

TOOLS

Helper, spray bottle, water, dish soap, measuring tape, low-tack tape, lint-free cloth, glass cleaner, felt squeegee, sharp blade, and cutting tape or a glass-safe guard.

1 · Check the fit

With the backing still on, hold the banner against the outside of the upper windshield. Decide where the lower edge should sit. Check the view from the driver seat and keep cameras, sensors, stickers, and sightlines clear.

2 · Clean the glass

Work out of heavy wind and direct hot sun. Clean the upper glass and corners thoroughly. Remove bonded debris from bare glass with a suitable scraper, then wipe away residue. The surface must be free of dust, wax, oil, and old adhesive.

3 · Find the center

Mark the center of the glass and banner with removable tape. Dry-fit the lower edge and check that the design looks level from inside. Have a helper hold the opposite end while you align it.

Apply with a center hinge

Position the banner first, then apply one half at a time. Leave the small transfer tape on.

Keep the paper backing in place while making the hinge. A helper can hold the loose end so the adhesive does not fold onto itself or touch dirt.

4 · Tape a center hinge

Align the center marks and lower edge one last time. Run a vertical strip of low-tack tape across the middle of the banner and onto the glass. This hinge holds the position while you work on the first half.

5 · Peel and apply one half

Fold one side back at the hinge. Peel its paper backing away and cut off only that loose backing. Hold the exposed vinyl just off the glass; squeegee it down from the center toward the outer edge in overlapping strokes.

6 · Repeat on the other side

Remove the hinge tape once the first half is secure. Peel the remaining backing and apply the second half from center outward. Resqueegee the full banner and edges. Leave the small transfer tape on until the vinyl bonds.

Trim and finish

Cut the excess to the actual windshield shape.

After the film has settled and holds its position, identify the overhang at both sides and above the curved top edge. Keep the blade off the rubber seal and paint.

7 · Check the overhang

The installed banner may extend past the left and right edges and above the top of the glass. Confirm the lower line is where you want it before cutting.

8 · Trim both sides

Use cutting tape or a glass-safe blade guard. Make light, controlled cuts through the vinyl only, then lift away each side offcut. Leave a small gap from the rubber or painted trim.

9 · Trim the curved top

Follow the actual top glass edge with protected, controlled cuts. Remove the top offcut and resqueegee every edge. Keep the small transfer tape in place.

Remove transfer tape and inspect

The cut-out design reveals the dark windshield after the tape is removed.

Once the banner is trimmed and firmly bonded, remove only the small transfer tape over the cut-out area. The release liner was removed earlier during application.

10 · Peel the transfer tape

Starting at one corner, slowly roll the small face patch back nearly flat. Hold the vinyl down as you peel. If a cut-out edge lifts, press it back and allow more bonding time.

11 · Inspect the finished banner

The letters are openings that reveal tinted windshield glass, so they look dark rather than white. Check edges, bubbles, lifting, and the driver view.

Wet application option

Recommended for this banner when you want easier positioning and bubble removal.

After completing steps 1-3, use the spray mix in the “Make your application spray” section below. Apply the wet method below instead of steps 4-6, then return to steps 7-9 for trimming. Let it dry and bond before step 10.

A · Mist the glass and adhesive

Remove the backing. Lightly mist the upper glass and exposed adhesive on the back of the banner. Avoid puddles; leave the small transfer tape on the front.

B · Position and adjust

With a helper, place the banner on the outside glass. Match the center marks and adjust the lower edge. The sides and top can overhang; they will be trimmed after application.

C · Squeegee from the center

Hold the banner steady. Squeegee the liquid and trapped air from the center toward the open edges with firm, overlapping strokes. Wait until the banner holds position before trimming.

Make your application spray

A simple water and dish-soap mix for the optional wet method.

You can prepare the application spray with supplies you likely already have. Use a clean spray bottle and mix only what you need for the job.

SPRAY BOTTLE

Water
+
1 drop of dish soap

Fill a clean 32 oz spray bottle with water, add one drop of liquid dish soap, close it, and gently mix.

How to use it

Spray a fine, even mist across the upper glass and exposed adhesive. Use enough to position the banner without leaving pools of fluid. Squeegee from the center outward until the solution is pushed to the edges.

After application

Let the vinyl dry and bond fully. Trim the sides and curved top when the banner no longer shifts; resqueegee the cut edges. Then remove the small transfer tape as shown in step 10.

Keep the bottle and squeegee clean. If you use a different banner material, check its supplied instructions before using a wet method.
